Sometime last week I was with a group of friends and we walked past a new apartment building with really big windows. One of them commented on how it’s a matter of time before someone forgets to properly close the drapes and we’ll be face to face with some people who are mid-smash. And while, yes, that’s true, it got me thinking on how we should really just let each other live.

Another example. Last summer we had some uncharacteristically high temperatures for our spot on the globe, so naturally everybody had their windows wide open. I was taking the dog for his late night stroll, and noticed my neighbor across the street must have had her boyfriend over for the evening. How I noticed? The sounds coming from that window. And you know what? It sounded genuine, too. I had to resist the urge to yell out “Get it, girl!” and went about my business.

So where am I going with all of this? We are all waaaaaay too eager to shame people for living their best lives. Whether it’s wearing what they want to wear, sleeping with who they want to sleep and the frequency with which they do that, even our texting (or sexting) behavior. I mean, it’s 2019. Shouldn’t we have evolved up to a point where we can just be happy for someone else who’s having fun in their lives rather than getting all resentful for whatever reason?

The number one counterpoint I get when something like this gets brought up? “But this is just my opinion because I would never conduct myself in such a manner.”

First of all, you’re being a pick-me b*tch (I use that term for both men and women). Secondly, if you don’t like it, then don’t do it. Life is really simple like that. Don’t like makeup? Don’t wear it. Don’t like texting pics of your private parts? Don’t do it. Actually, don’t do that when it’s unsolicited regardless. It’s the digital equivalent to the creepy dude flashing strangers in the park. Don’t like casual sex? Don’t have it. You get the idea. But don’t hate on someone else for enjoying the stuff you don’t like. It’s childish. If you wanna be bitter, do what you tell other people to do. Keep it to your damn self.
